Reviews policy

Two kinds of review appear on DomeCheck, our own research based assessments and reviews from owners. They are kept apart, and this is how each one is handled.

Two kinds of review

Our assessments are written by DomeCheck from published documents, dated prices, company records and owner evidence. They are research based. Where we have tested or inspected a product ourselves, the assessment says so.

Owner reviews come from people who have bought an enclosure and can show it. They are the owner’s words, not ours.

The two are always shown separately. Our score is never blended with an owner rating, and an owner rating is never used to nudge our score beyond the “owner evidence” criterion described in how we score.

Owner reviews: who can leave one

Owner reviews are not open yet. When they open, a review will need proof of ownership, such as an invoice, an order confirmation or photographs of the installed enclosure. We check the proof, then delete or redact anything personal in it.

Anyone connected to the maker or seller, including staff, family and paid agents, may not review that company’s products.

What we never do

  • We never write, rewrite or summarise an owner review ourselves or with software. A review is published in the owner’s words or not at all.
  • We never pay for reviews or reward them with gifts, discounts or prize draws.
  • We never hold back a genuine review because it is negative.
  • We never copy star ratings from other websites into our own ratings.
  • We never let a company choose which of its reviews appear.

How owner ratings are worked out

An owner rating is the plain average of the verified reviews for that product, shown with the number of reviews it is based on. When a review is removed, the average is worked out again. Reviews of different models are never merged into one rating.

When a review is removed

We remove a review when the proof of ownership turns out to be false, when the reviewer has an undisclosed connection to a seller or a competitor, when the review is about something other than the product or the company, or when it is abusive or unlawful. We keep a record of each removal and the reason.

Companies can reply, not remove

A company may post a reply under a review of its product, marked as the company’s reply. It cannot edit or delete the review.

Reporting a review

If you believe a review is fake, incentivised or otherwise breaks this policy, tell us. We look at every report, and we tell you what we decided.

Checking ourselves

We review this policy and how well we are following it at least once a year, and whenever the rules that apply to online reviews change.
